Lee Min Ho for Esquire Cover Issue 2022

Arguably the most popular generation of K-Drama, the 2.5 Generation began with the arrival of "Boys Over Flowers" and Lee Min Ho. Indeed, this drama was a cultural reset in the history of K-Dramas, and Lee Min Ho's popularity was revolutionary, changing the course of the Korean Wave forever. "Boys Over Flowers" also brought Kim Hyun Joong huge success, who followed it up with another massive hit, "Playful Kiss". Soon after, Lee Min Ho's popularity grew further by leaps and bounds with "The Heirs", which became a cult classic in its own right. This drama also brought us Kim Woo Bin in a whole new light, and fans all over the world just couldn't get enough. K-Dramas now became a global affair on a larger scale than ever before, with viewers from quite literally every corner of the Earth tuning in for that K-Drama goodness. OTT platforms showed increasing interest in Korean content, thus giving rise to streaming worldwide.

Kim Soo Hyun for "Dream High", followed by "Moon Embracing The Sun". Song Joong Ki in "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" and "The Innocent Man". Song Joong Ki's claim to international fame was his post-military smash hit "Descendants of the Sun". Ji Chang Wook, who came to be known as an irreplaceable and flawless actor, hit a streak of immeasurable success during this time with a host of powerful K-Dramas back to back: "Empress Ki", "Healer", "The K2", "Suspicious".

Lee also announced his return to television with a new drama titled The Heirs, a teen drama written by Kim Eun-sook. On why he decided to take on the role of a chaebol heir in high school four years after playing one in Boys Over Flowers, he answered "Before I grew past my 20s, I wanted to play a more upbeat character, one that would allow me to return to that feeling of simple, uncomplicated innocence that I had when I was younger." Premiering on October 9, 2013, The Heirs enjoyed immense popularity both locally, with a peak rating of 28.6%, and internationally, having over one billion hits on the Chinese streaming website iQiyi. Lee experienced an increase in his popularity globally.

Written by Kim Eun-sook, the drama is set in a high school populated by the privileged and uber-rich. It aired on SBS from October 9 to December 12, 2013.

This was the first Korean drama co-produced by American digital distribution platform Drama Fever and Korean production company Hwa&Dam Pictures. Due to its star-studded cast and writer Kim Eun-sook (who previously wrote Lovers in Paris, Secret Garden and A Gentleman's Dignity), international broadcasting rights were sold to 13 countries. It had the highest selling price in Japan among all the 2013 Korean dramas at US$30,000 for each episode. As of January 26, 2014, the series has garnered more than one billion views on Youku, China's biggest video streaming site.

The series follows a group of wealthy, privileged high school students as they are about to take over their families' business empires, overcoming difficulties and growing every step of the way.

Kim Tan (Lee Min-ho) is a wealthy heir to a large Korean congromerate called Jeguk Group. He was exiled to the U.S. by his half-brother Kim Won (Choi Jin-hyuk), who tries to take control of the family business. While in the States, he meets Cha Eun-sang (Park Shin-hye), who went there to look for her sister. Despite being engaged to Yoo Rachel (Kim Ji-won), a fellow heiress, Kim Tan, soon falls in love with Eun-sang. When Kim Tan returns to Korea, his former best friend turned enemy Choi Young-do (Kim Woo-bin) begins picking on Eun-sang to irritate Tan. Tension ensues when Young-do also falls in love with Eun-sang, and Kim Tan is forced to choose between his responsibility of pursuing the family business or love.
